The Critter lamp takes on a playfully evocative form. Crouched upon it’s 4 legs, the little creature opens its mouth wide to reveal the glowing bulb, reminiscent of a tongue.
Through its ambient glow and delightful presence, this table top lamp is modelled to be a companion of the home, rather than a purely functional object.
Scope: furniture
Dimensions: 6″ x 4″ x 9″
Materials: basswood, maple, yakisugi finish
Lamp features a tactilely organic wood texture. A dimmable, Edison-style bulb evokes movement within the “mouth”.
Process & Finish
Yakisugi is a wood finishing technique that allows for a beautifully textured, matte black finish. This is achieved through careful charring of the wood piece, gentle scrubbing with a wet rag, and finally, a natural oil to be generously applied.
This is was utilized within the piece as complimentary to the sculptural form. The textured nature and novelty of colour is able to reinforce the the animalistic/creature-eqsue qualities that a standard wood finish would not.
