This speculative playground design, proposed to be located in one of Edmonton’s developing suburbs, differentiates itself through its community approach. Structures would include both commercial-style equipment as well as exercise structures for older audiences, as inspired by “fitness parks” in East Asia. This is a response to these types of communities, impacted highly by urban sprawl, needing true community spaces that are safe and accessible to everyone regardless of age.
In compliment to it’s suburban surroundings, the park retains the bubbly, open shapes of the common playground while incorporating novel, engaging motifs to create a unique visual and tactile experience.
Scope: SPACE DESIGN
Dimensions: n/a
Materials: aluminum, various plastics, wet pour rubber
Equipment & Approach
Play structures are arranged to compliment the organic layout of the park. The wet pour rubber and paved paths emphasize this, but also keep accessibility in mind.
Exercise equipment is focused around the outer areas of the park while the traditional “play” equipment is focused on the center. Climbable “mushrooms” are scattered around the part to further integrate the design into it’s surrounding landscape.
